Podcast FAQs

What is a Podcast?
A podcast is a digital media file, or a series of such files, that is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers. A podcast is a specific type of webcast which, like 'radio', can mean either the content itself or the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also termed podcasting.

A podcast is a collection of files (usually audio and/or video) residing at a unique web feed address. People can "subscribe" to this feed by submitting the feed address to an aggregator. When new "episodes" become available in the podcast they will be automatically downloaded to that user's computer. Unlike radio or streaming content on the web, podcasts are not real-time. The material is pre-recorded and users can check out the material at their leisure, offline.

In other words, it's like suscribing to a newspaper; the good thing is that this subscription is for FREE.

To get these podcast files, you can use the following programs:
iTunes (Windows/Mac)
Juice (formerly known as iPodder, for /Windows/Mac/Linux)
jPodder (Windows/Linux)

Do I need an iPod to get a podcast file?
No. Although the name refers itself as using an iPod (or another MP3/MP4 player such as Zune or Zen), you don't need to have one to receive or suscribe to a podcast. You will need your computer, an aggregator software (above mentioned) and an internet connection.

Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be syndicated, subscribed to, and downloaded automatically, using an aggregator or feed reader capable of reading feed formats such as RSS or Atom.

Getting Started
Once you download and install the software, simply add one of IMER's podcast feeds. The software will automatically check for updates and download the files. Once the podcast has been downloaded, it will be available to load onto your MP3 player.

4. Once the podcasts are in your podcasting application, you simply plug your MP3 player into your computer and the podcast will be automatically transferred to your MP3 player.
